The U.S. Board on Geographic Names recently approved a proposal, endorsed by Commissioner Gannon, to apply the new name Turtle Creek to a previously unnamed stream in DeKalb County. Northwoods Area Neighborhood Association, Ms. Spencer, the teacher at Sagamore Hills Elementary School, with the assistance of her students, submitted the proposal, with the objective of increasing neighborhood pride and promoting the neighborhood’s history.
The new name has been entered into the Geographic Names Information System, the nation’s official geographic names repository, which is available and searchable online at https://usgs.gov/geonames/domestic-names.
The entry reads as follows: Turtle Creek: stream; 1.7 mi. long; heads 1.7 mi NNE of Candler Lake at 33°49’22”N, 84°18’15”W, flows generally NNW into the City of Chamblee to enter North Fork Peachtree Creek 1.7 mi.
